Postgraduate Opportunities

An important dimension of the growth of the Institute is the development of an extensive and interdisciplinary research capacity. We aspire to offer the very best facilities and support to attract the brightest and most innovative researchers.

A key component of this are the post graduate opportunities offered by the Institute in the form of the new SIMS Masters Program in Marine Science and Management and the annual Doctoral Fellowships generously funded by SIMS Foundation supporters.

SIMS Masters Program in Marine Science and Management

SIMS Masters 2011 Flyer

The new masters program will be taught under the framework of SIMS as a partnership between four major Australian universities. It is a unique Australian cross-institutional postgraduate marine science program, which will combine each institute’s strengths in marine science research and education to provide a truly multidisciplinary learning environment.

The program covers a wide diversity of disciplines including climate change science and mitigation, marine biology, coastal management and engineering, physical oceanography, marine ecology and geosciences. It allows you to customize the degree by advancing your knowledge and skill base to your personal interest and goals.

Beyond traditionally taught subjects, emphasis is placed on new approaches to marine science and management, such as geographic information systems, remote sensing data analyses and habitat mapping. The capstone unit Topics in Australian Marine Science will explore a variety of marine data provided by the national facility IMOS (Integrated Marine Observing System), which has deployed a range of instruments to measure Australia’s coast and oceans.

You can enrol in the program in one of the four partner universities: University of Sydney; University of New South Wales; Macquarie University and University of Technology Sydney.

Program requirements are:

  • Undertake the capstone unit that will be taught at SIMS by scientists from the four partner universities. This unit will have a practical component using real-life data from IMOS (Integrated Marine Observatory System).
  • Undertake the 6 units at your home university, including enrolling in the capstone subject
  • Choose 2 additional units at any of the partner universities.
  • Choose units covering at least 3 of the 4 main areas of knowledge that include: (1) Marine biology/Biological oceanography; (2) Marine geosciences/Coastal engineering; (3) Physical oceanography/Marine engineering; and, (4) Environmental management/sustainability.

SIMS Doctoral Fellowships

SIMS Doctoral Fellowships are awarded annually on a competitive basis and play a significant role in encouraging students to undertake research at PhD level.

A panel of highly qualified scientists assess the applications.  Criteria for awarding the fellowships include the track record of the applicant, the quality of the project, and the relevance of the project  to SIMS and its research themes. Recipients are listed below.
