Managing the Invisible Threat

Duration: 1.5 hours

Suitability: Stage 3 HSIE, Stage 4 Geography

Each year more than 500 billion litres of stormwater enters the sea from the streets of Sydney, bringing with it a mixture of chemical, microbiological and physical contaminants. Whilst ecosystems such as saltmarsh and mangroves forests are efficient natural filters, the large-scale fragmentation and loss of these critical systems from the foreshore means that stormwater entering our waterways is largely unscreened and unfiltered. In this workshop, students will be tasked with the challenge of designing their own stormwater quality improvement devices.
