Vessels

SIMS has four commercially registered vessels available for research:
 
  • Kirby II is a custom built 19 ft Rigid Inflatable Boat (R.I.B) with twin high-thrust 60hp Yamaha Motors. A restricted 2C survey vesseI, the Kirby II features ample work space for scuba diving, snorkeling and the use of a range of field sampling equipment.  Designed with  scuba tank holders and seating for six persons this vessel will suit both in-harbour and off-shore requirements, having a great balance of maneuverability and stability.  
  • Seatamer is a 2C survey vessel for use up to 15 nautical miles from the shore and can carry up to 8 people (2 x crew & 6 x specialised personnel) for onwater operations or 6 people (2 x crew & 4 x specialised personnel) for SCUBA operations.  It is a 6.3 metre vessel with twin 80hp outboard engines. The Seatamer has a cabin for shelter and is equipped with an electric 100kg davit and large side entry door. 
  • Clark Condor is a 2D/E registered vessel for use in sheltered waters (smooth/partially smooth) and can carry 7 people (1 x crew & 6 x specialised personnel).  It is a 5.5 metre aluminium centre console vessel with a single 80hp outboard.
  • SeaDoo 150 Jetski is equipped with some of the latest hydrographic survey equipment to enable inshore surveys normally inaccessible or unsafe for a regular vessel.

 

 

All vessels are available either on a trailer or provided ample notice is given, can be available on the water at SIMS Chowder Bay site.  If you require the Seatamer on its trailer you must ensure that the towing vehicle is rated with a maximum towing capacity of no less than 3t and that the vehicle is fitted with a compatible Hydraulic/Electric trailer brake controller (SIMS can provide a suitable vehicle at an additional cost).

All our vessels require a NSW Maritime Boat Drivers Licence to operate, while Jetski users must have a NSW PWC licence and have completed a SIMS approved jetski skills training/assessment course. All operators must complete an induction for each vessel that they use and be familiar with the Safety Management System and Standard Operating Procedures governing the vessels.
