Harbour Hike

This is a new initiative for Sydney, to be held annually on Father’s Day. It features an 11Km hike along harbour foreshore paths, from Kirribilli to SIMS Headquarters at Chowder Bay, where a variety of talks and fun educational events will be held. The Sydney Morning Herald is the Major Media Partner of SIMS Foundation for this event.

The inaugural SIMS Harbour Hike was held on Sunday 4th September 2011 under magnificent blue skies.  Over 2000 walkers discovered the magic of the harbour paths as they made their way to Chowder Bay and the Marine Festival there.

The festival allowed SIMS to involve the community in the exciting research conducted at the Institute.  There was something for everyone, including a series of engaging marine science lectures, rafting tours offered by Lands Edge and guided by a SIMS scientist, and for our younger walkers, an opportunity to peer into the wonder of the marine world.

The Harbour Hike allows SIMS to bring science to the community and to inform the public of their role in preserving the magnificence of Sydney Harbour.
